In 1914, the Genbaku Dome in Hiroshima was a dazzling center of elegant urban life in Japan. On August 6, 1945, the atomic bomb called Little Boy detonated 500 feet away from the building, killing 78,000 people and leveling the city within a single second. But the dome miraculously survived, and in 2006 it stands as a silent reminder of the horrors of nuclear power. In this experimental short film, the history of the 20th century flies past, illustrated by 600 photographs of the Genbaku Dome.In 1914, the Genbaku Dome in Hiroshima was a dazzling center of elegant urban life in Japan. 24 FRAMES PER DAY was conceived by combining 24 photographs captured each day over a period of 9 months. Yes, that's what makes this baby! And it's the same photograph each day, or rather the same frame each day. A daily meditation by the filmmaker photographing the front door of her 'home' makes this a very personal and political film that raises important questions around immigration, cultural stereotypes, diasporic and queer identity.
Shorts Compilation
DVF presents the top three winning entries in five categories from the 7th annual 24 Hour Dallas Video Festival held May 16th-17th.
Short
3STORIES ABOUT EVIL is a narrative short film shot almost entirely with still photographs in 3 different photographic formats. All three stories are very black comedies about family, the media and children's beauty pageants.
Short doc
In ballet, ambition is irrelevant if your physical structure falls short of perfection. 52 PERCENT is a chilling observation of one Russian girl’s attempt to enter a ballet academy. The film reveals how young girls’ bodies are weighed, measured, twisted and stretched to determine if they meet an almost impossible standard.
Comedy Short
This film is intended to offer useful advice on attending film festivals. It deals with issues such as: how do you learn about film festivals, how do you decide what to see, what are the protocols and rules of ettiquette at film festivals, and what sort of unpredictable events are possible during the fest. We also deal specifically with underground film festivals. We cover issues such as what's up with them?, what sort of works do they show, what sort of person is likely to attend such an event, and how do underground film festivals compare with mainstream film festivals? The film also speculates on how underground film festivals may have influenced film culture, and on what lies in the future for these undertakings.
Shorts Compilation
A short compilation about the world of filmmaking and film festivals.
Short doc
A memoir of early adolescence constructed from an instructional video originally produced in 1959.
